What is AAC?

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to a diverse set of tools and techniques used to supplement or replace speech for individuals with communication difficulties.

  • These may include (but are not limited) to speech-generating devices, picture communication boards, sign and gesture-based systems.

  • AAC enables people with conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, or head injury/ stroke-related impairments to express themselves, engage with others and participate more fully in social interactions and daily activities.

  • It's about giving actual power to individuals with diverse communication needs to have a voice and be heard.

Furthermore, all participants who have been filmed will get the opportunity to see an early draft of the documentary and suggest if there is anything they would like to see changed or deleted, within reason. Where applicable, a special consent form using Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) will be used. This consent form is copyright of the I-ASC Study (Manchester Metropolitan University), and has been used with their permission.
